Zanjeer….It’s a remake of the film with the same title back in 1973 with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead, directed by Prakash Mehra. This one is directed by Apoorva Lakhia who is known for “Shootout at Lokhandwala”,”Ek Ajnabee”,”Dus Kahaniyaan” & “Mission Istanbul”. When the trailer was out, it created a frenzy for two reasons one being a remake and another one being that the lead character was hand picked by Big B himself. Well inspite of all this hype and hoopla, the movie fails to deliver at the end of the day. It was a great disappointment. The original screenplay by Salim-Javed was not re-lived by the current screenplay by Apoorva Lakhia & Suresh Nair. Zanjeer made a mark in the industry back then and gave a major lift to Amitabh Bachchan’s career. That should have been the case with this remake, which should have given Ram Charan a warm welcome in Bollywood.
Ram Charan who marked his debut in Bollywood with this flick has done a great job, he has a dynamic screen presence and carried the role of ACP Vijay Khanna “The Angry Young Man” very well. It doesn’t seem that he is from down south when it comes to language, it’s clean. Priyanka Chopra as Mala was fine nothing to praise about, except for couple of dance numbers. Atul Kulkarni was seen after a while and did a good job. Sanjay Dutt who played Sher Khan was a perfect choice for the role,it was tailor made for him. Mahie Gill as Mona Darling had hardly any role,In fact she was a comic relief in this loosely scripted flick. Prakash Raj was fantastic he is growing to be the best villain these days and is well acquainted in Bollywood.
To make a masala entertainer you need all the ingredients right. Just because there are larger than life fight sequences with heavy blasts and one liners, you can’t call it a blockbuster. Few dialogues were really good which were timed well. With poor screenplay, all the other technicalities of the movie does not seem good. A movie which could have been a tribute to the previous one, failed terribly. In spite of some powerful performances, it could not hold the movie together. In 1973 it gave a title to Big B as “Angry Young Man” in the industry, but this one made every young or old men and women Angry in the cinema hall!!!!
