The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug….It’s the second installment from the 3 part series based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel The Hobbit, beginning with An Unexpected Journey (2012) and set to conclude with There and Back Again (2014). These 3 films are a prequel to “The Lord Of the Rings”. All these are directed by Peter Jackson, who indeed does not need an introduction, as his work speaks for himself, never ceases to amaze everyone with his penchant for fantasy movies. Whether it’s the “King Kong” or “The Tintin” or “The Lord of The Rings”.
The journey continues from the first part and have kept the motive strong with “Bilbo Baggins” as the key point in the movie. The story leads on with dwarves and the hobbit on the quest to reclaim the glory of lonely mountain, which is guarded by the slithering dragon, designed to horrific detail and is deadly. Peter keeps the script going at a great pace in spite of the long duration of the movie, I would say this is one of the best middle earth movie made till date. People who thought the first part was dragging its feet, this one makes it up for that.
The visual effects keeps getting better in Peter Jackson’s movie, who is the co-founder of WETA Digital, the VFX in this one is mind blowing, you get to see some really unimaginable creatures and New Zealand have been shown in the most beautiful way possible. The action in the movie was terrific, gives you a rush when the Elves save the dwarves that sequence was a treat to the action buffs. 3D effects were spectacular and the movie being shot in HFR 3D(High Frame Rate), gives you an added visual pleasure whose clarity is close to human eye. With the sound recorded in Dolby Atmos it was a double treat, your heart will skip a beat at few places in the movie. The river runs through and over you, while dragon comes closer to you with its dreadful roar.
When it comes to acting and performance comparison between characters in the movie, we can’t separate them as each and every one have done their best no one can be compared. There is a lot to admire in the movie, which keeps you hooked on to the screen with endless entertainment, just when you are eager to know what happens next, they end it abruptly making us wait for an year. The Desolation of Smaug makes a perfect sequel to An Unexpected Journey and will be There and Back Again in 2014. Definitely worth a watch, you will be blown away with spectacular visuals and groundbreaking sound.
